Cricket Australia today announced that the National Selection Panel (NSP) has chosen a 14-man squad for the Travelex One-Day International Tour of India, beginning in Gwalior on 26 October.
The tour will see Australia play a total of six matches against India and New Zealand, with the possibility of a final in Calcutta on 18 November.
The squad is:
STATE | AGE | MATCHES | |
---|---|---|---|
Ricky Ponting (captain) | TAS | 28 | 178 |
Adam Gilchrist (vice-captain) | WA | 32 | 171 |
Michael Bevan | NSW | 33 | 213 |
Andrew Bichel | QLD | 33 | 54 |
Nathan Bracken | NSW | 26 | 11 |
Michael Clarke | NSW | 22 | 5 |
Jason Gillespie (subject to fitness) | SA | 28 | 57 |
Ian Harvey | VIC | 31 | 55 |
Matthew Hayden | QLD | 31 | 74 |
Brad Hogg | WA | 33 | 34 |
Brett Lee | NSW | 26 | 73 |
Jimmy Maher | QLD | 29 | 25 |
Damien Martyn | WA | 31 | 126 |
Andrew Symonds | QLD | 28 | 73 |
Fast-bowler Jason Gillespie has been included in the squad subject to proving his fitness after suffering a grade one tear of his left side muscle during the first 3 Test in Perth.
West Australian fast-bowler Brad Williams will come into the squad should Gillespie be declared unfit.
Darren Lehmann who is suffering from soreness in his left Achilles tendon, and needs to pass a fitness assessment to play in this Friday's second 3 Test in Sydney, has been overlooked for the Indian tour following medical advice.
Explaining the decision to exclude Lehmann, NSP Chairman Trevor Hohns said: "We have accepted the view that the demands placed on the body are sufficiently different in a one-off Test match compared to the intensity of a one-day tournament.
"The Cricket Australia medical team believes that although Darren might be able to get through this Test match, he will not be able to endure the rigors of a one-day tournament without suffering further damage.
"Darren is fully accepting of that view.
"From a team perspective it's disappointing because he has been a key member of Australia's success at one-day level," he said.
Selection also sees New South Wales left-arm paceman Nathan Bracken included in the squad for the first time since the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa where he replaced the injured Jason Gillespie.
It will be the second limited-overs tournament Bracken has played in India having taken part in Australia's five-match series against the host nation in March 2001.
Bracken's young New South Wales team-mate, Michael Clarke, has also been included. The right-hand batsman who made his one-day international debut against England in Adelaide last January, played four matches on the Travelex Tour of the West Indies as a replacement for the injured Damien Martyn.
Queensland Bulls captain Jimmy Maher, who missed out on selection for the three-match VB Series of one-day internationals against Bangladesh during August, has also been included.
Commenting on the squad chosen Hohns added: "We know this tour will be a tough assignment as India and New Zealand are two very capable one-day sides.
"Despite this, we feel that we have the depth necessary to get us through the tournament.
"Jason Gillespie, who suffered an injury to his side during the Test against Zimbabwe, is included in the squad, with his fitness to be assessed ahead of departure.
"If he doesn't come up, then we think Brad Williams is a suitable replacement.
"Nathan Bracken has been part of our thinking for some time and he deserves his opportunity to be part of the Australian attack," he said.
The Australian squad will depart for India on Wednesday 22 October.
