The use of technology for decision making in international cricket and a three yearly review of on field playing conditions will be the major agenda items for next week's ICC Cricket Committee-Playing (CC-P) meeting, in London from 23rd to 25th May.
The three day meeting, chaired by Sunil Gavaskar, will consider the question of technology against a background of technical developments in the broadcast coverage of the game and its affect on the role and authority of umpires.
The scope of the discussion will consider a full range of options, including maintaining the current situation, an increased use of technical assistance in making decisions, or a reduced reliance on technology.
Australian umpire Darrell Hair, a member of the ICC panel, will join the meeting on the first day to give an umpire's perspective on the role of the on field and third umpires, in relation to TV replay referrals and decisions.
Standard Playing Conditions
The standard playing conditions for all Test and One Day International cricket are reviewed every three years by CC-P, which has delegated decision making authority from the ICC Executive Board.
All member countries have been invited to contribute recommendations and views for the meeting. Key matters for discussion within a full review of playing conditions will be:
Test Matches
- use of lights
- penalty runs
One Day Internationals
- penalty runs
- fielding restrictions
- number of players in a team
- Duckworth/ Lewis method - Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis will attend the meeting for this item
Decisions reached will be effective for a three year period from 1st September 2001, although CC-P will maintain an ongoing watching brief on the technology issue.
The Committee will receive an update on the progress achieved to date in the restructuring of the international panel of umpires and referees. Decisions relating to this matter will be taken
at the June Annual Conference.
All ICC Full Member countries plus Associates will be represented at the CC-P meeting.
