At Baroda, November 9. West Indies won by four wickets. Although Greenidge and Haynes plundered 69 runs from the first fourteen overs of the innings, West Indies, chasing 215, were stretched to the penultimate over, having been slowed down in mid-innings by the spinners, Shastri and Azad. With greater agility in the field, India, who were handicapped by the absence of Gavaskar and Vengsarkar, might well have won. They won the toss to bat while a somewhat uneven pitch was at its best, but though the usually ebullient Srikkanth batted for twenty overs, their progress was slow until Shastri and Patil added 69 for the third wicket in thirteen overs.
