Pakistan Tour: Warhorse put out to pasture again
By Peter Deeley
INTIKHAB ALAM, Pakistan`s long-serving manager, has been removed
from the managership of the side coming to England this summer. No successor has yet been announced but Salim Yousuf, who
was No 2 to Intikhab during the World Cup, is considered one of
the favourites for the post.
Yousuf will be principally remembered in this country for some
controversial wicketkeeping during Pakistan`s 1987 tour here,
particularly one unsuccessful appeal for a catch off Ian Botham during the Leeds Test.
Intikhab, who was manager of the 1992 Pakistan tourists when
they won the five-Test series in England 2-1, has been overlooked before by his board. He missed a home series last year
but was called back for Pakistan`s winter tour of Australia. At
the time Intikhab described himself as the "old warhorse" always ready to come to the aid of his country.
The 17-man party, who will play three Tests and three one-day
internationals, is led by Lancashire`s Wasim Akram. He will be
supported at the heart of the attack by the former Surrey
fast bowler, Waqar Younis.
Arif Abbasi, chief executive of the Board of Control for
Cricket in Pakistan, said: "Wasim is fully satisfied and happy
with the selection of the team."
Another backroom surprise is the hiring of former Australian
Test captain Ian Chappell to prepare the side for England. Abbasi said: "He will help in our training and in devising a
strategy for the team."
Many players will be familiar to English crowds, including
Salim Malik - who has now put behind him the Australian bribery allegations - and leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed.
