Ishant Sharma claims seven wickets to help India beat England

India's fast bowler, Ishant Sharma, produced career-best figures of 7 for 74 to help his side beat England by 95 runs, in the second Test match at Lord's on Monday.

Sharma, who went wicketless in the first innings, produced one of the most memorable spells of fast bowling - in the second - to destroy England's resistance.

England needed 319 runs to win, in the second innings, and they lost their top-four batsmen with just 72 runs on the board.

Sharma induced an edge from captain, Alastair Cook, and dismissed him for 22 on the fourth day. England ended the day for 105 for 4, still 214 runs shy of the target.

On the fifth day, India went unrewarded until the final ball of a morning session. Joe Root and Moeen Ali had played with skill and fortitude before Sharma broke their 101-run stand. He banged the ball in short and had Moeen caught at short leg. It was just the breakthrough they needed.

Matt Prior joined Root in the middle and with only four overs before the new ball, he might have been expected to play cautiously. But he took an aggressive approach and thumped Sharma for two boundaries.

Sharma's strategy of banging the ball in short, paid dividends. He had Prior was caught at deep midwicket. What followed was a procession of wickets. First, Ben Stokes, and then Root whose pull shot found the deep-square leg fielder.

Three overs later, Stuart Broad gloved another short-pitched delivery to the keeper. Ishant's spell with the old ball left England's plans in tatters. Ravindra Jadeja then ran out James Anderson to complete the win.

"The way batsmen played in the first innings, Ajinkya played really well in the first innings, that gave us the momentum," Sharma said after winning the Man-of-the-Match award.

"Cricket is a great leveller, the way MS bhai handled the team, the way he keeps on motivating the guys. I think all these wickets are not for me, it is for the captain. He told me, 'you are tall enough, you have to bowl the bouncer,' that's what I did and it worked for me."complete the win."

MS Dhoni said India's bowlers made the most of favourable conditions and were instrumental in the win.

"That last over before lunch, Ishant didn't really want to bowl short, I was like, 'you have to bowl it,' I turned the other way round. He got his wicket and then it gave him the confidence to keep bowling short, keep attacking the batsman. I think it was a fantastic performance," Dhoni said.
