Following the superb finish to today's Super Eight match at Providence Stadium, Guyana, both Charl Langeveldt of South Africa and Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga were named as joint men of the match, it was clarified this evening.
Although Langeveldt was given the prize at the post-match presentation, it had been decided both he and Malinga should each receive the award, jointly, in recognition of their outstanding performances.
Both men attended post-match media conferences as men of the match.
Langeveldt collected career-best ODI figures of 5-39 and then made one not out, not a large score numerically but a vital innings that helped his side to a one-wicket win.
Malinga, meanwhile, took 4-54, including four wickets in four balls that set up a nerve-jangling finish.
The 23 year-old removed Shaun Pollock (bowled) and Andrew Hall (caught by Upul Tharanga) with the last two balls of his eighth over and then dismissed Jacques Kallis (caught by wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara) and Makhaya Ntini (bowled) with the first two deliveries of his ninth over.
It was only the fifth hat-trick in ICC Cricket World Cup history, the second by a Sri Lankan (after Chaminda Vaas, against Bangladesh at Pietermaritzburg in 2003) but it was the first time in the tournament's history a player has taken four wickets in successive deliveries.
The other ICC CWC hat-tricks have been taken by India's Chetan Sharma, against New Zealand in Nagpur in 1987, Saqlain Mushtaq of Pakistan, against Zimbabwe at The Oval in 1999 and Brett Lee of Australia, against Kenya in Durban four years ago.
Langeveldt and Malinga will both be awarded three points each towards the player of the tournament standings.
It was a fantastic finale to the first international match at Guyana's new stadium with the next match at the venue Friday's Super Eight clash between England and Ireland.
