The LIAT sponsored Leeward Islands Cricket Tournament begins this
Thursday the 11th of May at the Ronald Webster Park in Anguilla. The
first Round of the tournament will pit defending one-day Champions,
Anguilla against Montserrat in the three day match from Thursday the
11th to Saturday the 13th and in the one-day match on Sunday the 14th.
Montserrat, who have not entered the Tournament for the past two years
due to the Volcanic activity which has ravaged the island, have
managed to enter this year and will take part as normal.
Anguilla, on the other hand, are the defending one-day Champions and
are hoping to repeat their one-day success as well as improve and
hopefully win the three-day competition. At the helm will be seasoned
Leewards opener Alex Adams and his deputy will be Chaka Hodge. The
Anguilla team is generally a good mix of seasoned players like Adams
himself as well as Paulivor Rogers, Terry Adams, Rudolph Proctor and
Eversley Browne as well as promising youth like Leon Lake, Marlon
Martin Zachary Kenworthy, Richard Stevens and Girdon Connor. The team,
however, will miss the services of young Omari Banks who left the
island for England for a two-month spell with Leicestershire County
Cricket Club where he will play second XI cricket. The team, is
hoping, however, not to miss the services of Banks and to perform
consistently throughout the tournament in an effort to win both
competitions.
Only one other match will be played this weekend, which is between
Nevis and the Combined Virgin Islands in St. Croix. The full Anguilla
squad reads:- Alex Adams (captain), Chaka Hodge (vice captain), Terry
Adams, Paulivor Rogers, Marlon Martin, Zachary Kenworthy, Rudolph
Proctor, Carlos Sasso, Leon Lake, Eversley Browne, Richard Stevens,
Girdon Connor, Mitchell Harrigan, Clarence Fleming-Rogers, Cardigan
Connor (coach) and Sam Webster (manager).
