Warwickshire fast bowler Ed Giddins has been called up to the
First-Class Counties' Select XI squad to face Sri Lanka A in the
Vodafone Trophy match at the Riverside Ground, Durham on
Wednesday 28 July, it was announced today.
Giddins replaces Durham fast bowler Stephen Harmison, who is
suffering with shin soreness.
The Warwickshire player has taken 40 wickets in first-class
cricket this season, following on from the 84 victims he claimed
in 1998, and commenting on his choice Chairman of Selectors David
Graveney said: "Ed fully merits his inclusion.
"He started the season slowly but is now taking wickets again, as
he did last season and his choice for the match at Durham is a
reward for that consistency.
"Ed, along with several other fast bowlers, is very much in the
thoughts of the selectors, and now he has the chance to show what
he can do in a representative side."
Admission is free and the match, scheduled to start at 10.45 am,
will be played in whites under standard playing conditions for
one-day matches involving touring sides.
The full squad is:
Darren Maddy (Leicestershire), Darren Stevens (Leicestershire),
Chris Adams (Sussex, Captain), Ben Smith (Leicestershire), Derek
Kenway (Hampshire), Vikram Solanki (Worcestershire), Paul Weekes
(Middlesex), Paul Nixon (Leicestershire, Wicketkeeper), Paul Franks
(Nottinghamshire), Ed Giddins (Warwickshire), Alamgir Sheriyar
(Worcestershire), Melvyn Betts (Durham).
Team Manager: James Whitaker
The squad does not include players from the eight counties
competing in the NatWest Trophy quarter-final ties on the same
day - Lancashire, Yorkshire, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire,
Somerset, Kent, Northamptonshire and Surrey - or from Derbyshire,
who are playing a one-day game against New Zealand. Ends.
