The Kankaria Lake: take your kids along  •  AFP

Go the Kankaria Lake
It's pretty well known in Ahmedabad. There's lot to see and do there now. There are lots of rides for kids - there is a place called Balvatika for them. Every kid in Ahmedabad must have been to the lake at least once. When we were in school, there used to be day trips there. There's also a walkway which ends in a beautiful garden called Nagina Wadi. You have to take a boat trip to get there.
Visit the Gandhi Ashram
It might be a common thing to do but it's still an essential. There is something peaceful about the ambience. It's situated in a crowded area but you feel the peace as soon as you walk into the ashram. It's difficult to describe in words. You have to go there. It has a nice museum now where you can see many of the letters Gandhiji wrote, and also a lot of lovely photographs.
Take the bus
You must take a bus on the new BRTS routes (Bus Rapid Transit System). They're very punctual, and they let you see a lot of the city. You can take them just for fun.
Visit the Sidi Saeed Mosque
This one again is a symbol of Ahmedabad. It's pretty famous for its elegantly designed jaali (lattice work) screens made from single pieces of rock. These are used in 10 circular windows. Simply outstanding.
Shop in the city's malls
Ahmedabad is full of malls. There is the big Reliance Mall and so many others. I often go to these malls to shop, or just hang around with friends in them or catch a movie.
