Sri Lanka: Clubs protest over unfair promotions
The Daily News
Eight clubs have protested to the Sri Lanka Cricket Board interim
committee chairman Rienzie Wijetilleke over unfair promotions made by
the Board which came into office in March 1999.
Badureliya CC, Moratuwa SC, Wennappuwa SC, Seeduwa Raddoluwa SC, Old
Servatius, Saracens SC and Zaverites CC have accused the Board of
going back on their early decision to reduce the strength of the
clubs in division I, Segment 'A' and retaining Antonian SC, Matara
SC, Kurunegala YCC and Police SC - clubs which had voted with the
present regime.
They also point out that in division I Segment 'B' according to the
new proposal the number of clubs is to be increased to 34 with six
new clubs being promoted from division II, Segment 'B'.
"These six clubs, Ragama SC, Malay SC, Dimbula SC, Weera SC, Chilaw
Marians SC and Kandy YCC are also clubs which voted with the present
regime and this is a way of thanking them. As a matter of fact, these
clubs were promised a promotion," states the protest letter.
They also point out the standing of these clubs in the division II
have never been anywhere near the top and their promotion to division
I Segment 'B' over and above clubs that have performed much better in
division II was of grave concern.
"We are all of the opinion that the tournament structure in the
country has to be revamped wit our future cricket in mind. Such
preferential promotions for personal benefit should not be
tolerated," the letter states.
