At Tangier, August 21. Sri Lanka won by 27 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka.
Sanath Jayasuriya made all the headlines as his team won the inaugural Morocco Cup. He was
at his unforgiving best with the bat in the morning, and by the time he picked up the trophy, the
$120,000 cheque and the man of the series award, he had his right arm in a sling after dislocating
his shoulder as he caught Gibbs. It was an unusual day all round, with military top brass, a local
band playing cacophonous six-foot bugles and hordes of chanting schoolchildren among the biggest
crowd of the tournament. Sri Lanka made a quick start as Jayasuriya again picked up easy runs
off the hapless Telemachus, but the innings did not live up to its early promise. Gibbs's brilliant
diving catch in the covers off a well-struck drive by Arnold felt like a turning point. However,
South Africa's top order crumpled almost as easily as it had three days previously against Pakistan.
This time it was left to Boucher and Dippenaar to pick up the pieces, working a run-a-ball century
stand. But, too far behind the run-rate, the South Africans perished trying to regain ground.
Man of the Match: S. T. Jayasuriya. Man of the Series: S. T. Jayasuriya.
