Bichel on Surrey`s shortlist
BY CHARLES RANDALL
SURREY have switched their attention to seeking a replacement
for Brian McMillan as their overseas player, with Andrew Bichel,
an uncapped Australian fast bowler, as the most likely choice.
The county said yesterday they were "desperately disappointed"
that McMillan had decided against moving to the Oval after
signing a two-year contract.
One positive aspect to emerge for Surrey is that the signing of
a one-season player such as Bichel, a Queenslander, would allow
them scope for the possible return of Waqar Younis next
year, though the Pakistan fast-bowler is already considering
offers from other counties.
The decision by the South African authorities to block the
McMillan move has added to Surrey`s disenchantment with the
overseas bandwagon, which several counties want to see
discontinued after the 1999 moratorium.
Paul Sheldon, Surrey`s chief executive, said: "The Surrey view
has been that we probably would be happy to see the end of it,
but I can see the arguments clearly on both sides.
"With the demands of international cricket now, it`s less and
less likely that any international cricketer, especially a
bowler, is going to be available."
Last summer Australia`s Carl Rackemann was brought in when
doubts about Waqar`s fitness emerged; the Pakistan tour has ruled
him out this season.
