How well do Mitchell Starc and Travis Head know each other's ODI careers? They give it a good go.
Who did Starc bowl to in the first over of the 2015 World Cup final?
Head guesses that memorable over right away: Brendon McCullum was beaten off the first two balls he faced (after Martin Guptill faced two himself) and was bowled by a beautiful inswinger off his third ball for a duck. Then it's Head's turn: Who did I catch in the 2023 ODI World Cup final?
No trouble for Starc either in answering this one: Rohit Sharma, caught for 47 off Glenn Maxwell's bowling. Head, who was at cover, had to run back and dive to catch the high ball over his shoulder. "First one you caught," Starc jokes. Does Head remember how many wickets Starc took in that final? He does indeed! Starc took 3 for 55, including the wickets of Shubman Gill and KL Rahul.
What about Head's score in the 2023 final? Starc gets this one wrong by 14 runs, guessing the figure to be 123. Head, in fact, made a match-winning 137 off 120 balls, falling just two runs short of victory. "Threw it away," he says of his late dismissal, pulling a catch off Mohammed Siraj to deep midwicket. "Good hundred, though," Starc replies.
Can Head guess how many ODI wickets Mitchell Starc has taken in his career? He comes pretty close with 228. The correct answer - at the time of filming the interview before Australia's three-match ODI series against India at home - is 244.
What about Starc's best ODI figures - does Head know those? "You've got a six[-for]," Head muses. "A couple, yeah," Starc casually drops that nugget in. Head gets it after that - 6 for 28 against New Zealand in Auckland during the 2015 World Cup.
Head also gets to flex a bit when Starc tries to guess his highest ODI score. "Isn't there a 150," Starc asks. "Two 150s," Head reminds him.
