Leeds- England yesterday named a predictable squad of 13 for the
crucial third Test against the West Indies at Old Trafford, starting
August 3.
Left-handed opener Marcus Trescothick's consistent scoring in the
triangular One-Day series earned his place and chairman of selectors
David Graveney indicated he would be in the final XI.
Another left-hander, Graham Thorpe, a seasoned middle-order batsman
with an average of 39 and six hundreds from his 57 Tests, is recalled
to Tests for the first time since opting out of the winter's tour of
South Africa.
The two batsmen making way are Mark Ramprakash and Nick Knight. The
experiment of using Ramprakash as an opener after a career spent in
the middle order ends after scores of 18, 0, 0 and 2 in the first two
Tests. Aged 30 and after 40 Tests, he will be lucky to be given
another chance.
The 13: Nasser Hussain (captain), Mike Atherton, Andy Caddick,
Dominic Cork, Robert Croft, Darren Gough, Graeme Hick, Matthew
Hoggard, Alec Stewart, Marcus Trescothick, Graham Thorpe, Michael
Vaughan, Craig White.
