The nominations are in and the virtual voting booth is open in the election for Australia’s best commentator. Think carefully as you can make only one mark in the poll that stays open throughout the World Cup Super Eights.
To help you we’ve included supporter tributes of your favourites, but the list of 26 choices makes choosing a federal senator as easy as a popped catch at short-leg. Creativity and bluntness were key elements of your entertaining and thought-provoking replies. A special mention goes to Nicholas Fry for this poem.
The ABC boys are good, too serious, not merry,
Apart, of course, from giggling snorting Kerry,
On Fox, it’s AB, BJ, Junior, Chuck and Flem,
But there is one man who stands above all of them.
“It’s all happening”, “He’s got him”, “Can you believe that?” he’ll shrill,
Australia’s best commentator; last name Lawry, first name Bill.
Copies of Lawry’s calls were popular and Richie Benaud’s care over every word was praised. In the radio bunker Kerry O’Keeffe won applause for jokes and analysis and Jim Maxwell, Glenn Mitchell and Peter Roebuck were congratulated for their knowledge. The new breed on pay tv has yet to dominate the ears and airwaves, but Mark Waugh was tipped as one to watch. Many of the Fox Sports men did not receive any special recommendations, which might prompt sharp text messages to tardy family members.
Despite requests for the best operators, people naturally felt compelled to let us know their worst and it could be a category for next season. Until then it’s No. 1 or nothing. Happy voting.
