shorter and sliding across off, defended solidly off the backfoot and that is it, players shake hands! Both batters hug each-other and breathe a sigh of relief
New Zealand vs West Indies, 1st Test at Christchurch, NZ vs WI, Dec 02 2025 - Match Result
6:30pm: What an advert for Test cricket! A record second highest fourth-innings total ever in Test match history. West Indies have earned a lot of respect and all credit to Justin Greaves, who stepped up to the plate and did what looked unthinkable. A Herculean effort and he couldn't have done it without the support of Kemar Roach, who was steadfast and continued in his bull-headed way to keep his end of the bargain. New Zealand tried everything with a depleted attack but couldn't find success. One of the best Test matches of the year and we hope you enjoyed our coverage! Until next time, this is Rvel Zahid signing off on behalf of Shashank Kishore and Chetan Kumar. Goodbye and have a great weekend! Cheers
Justin Greaves, Player of the Match:: Special day for me and the team. Kemar, the senior pro, guided me all the way. Coach told me once you get in, stay in. To be a part of history is exciting, but for me, it's one day at a time. For us, it was just about getting into the last session - 100 runs in the last session - but losing Shai was a big thing for us. (On Kemar Roach) Legendary. He inspired me when I came into the Barbados team.
Tom Latham, New Zealand Captain: It was a Test match that had it all. It was a great Test match to be involved in. When you have two of your seamers go down, it's never ideal, and sometimes you have to give credit; the way West Indies played was outstanding (praises Duffy and Foulkes how they didn't complain about extended spells) We'll work out the replacements for the couple of guys over the next 24 hours. Always nice to spend time in the middle and give ourselves a chance to win a Test match. I guess the way he (Rachin Ravindra) played was outstanding and gave us a chance to declare.
Roston Chase, West Indies Captain: I feel lovely -- first points on the board in the Test Championship. Herculean effort by Greaves, proud of him, proud of this moment for him and obviously Roach coming back into the team -- he's a modern-day legend. After the tea interval, I thought we could push, but they batted normally, and we're happy with what the guys did. So much happened today that I forgot about Shai Hope; he's been in good form since the India tour. We know how great a player he is. I think it'll give us a lot of confidence; we know we can compete and win. If we could score a bit more -- probably look at 280-300 in the first innings...and if we can turn up and get that lead early, it'll be great.
West Indies applied themselves and showed what they are capable of when they put their heart, mind, body and soul into the game because they have it all in their cricket DNA. This performance will surely impress the West Indies legends and their ardent cricket followers, including all the Test match aficionados around the world. In hindsight, you could argue they could have stretched for the win but it might have been a high-risk move after doing the grinding work and could have resulted in heartbreak had they lost wickets in a flurry. The stubborn resistance from the men in maroon will inspire the whole team and they'll back themselves to compete strongly in the remaining Tests. West Indies had a shaky start in pursuit of 531 but Shai Hope was consistent and led the way with a brilliant 140 while Justin Greaves played the perfect foil before taking the lead once he lost his partner. Earlier, Tom Latham and Rachin Ravindra stitched together a mammoth partnership of 279 that propelled them to what looked like an impregnable score to bowl out West Indies. All in all, it was a great Test match that will be remembered for a long time
looped up on a shorter length and gets some turn across off, defended
around the wicket, floated on off and bunted into the off side
clips this nto the real estate at midwicket for a single
And he does it! Etches his name in the history books! Gets to 201 and soaks in all the applause! a big hug to Roach as he clatters this up and over gully for four. He's cramping, so he doesn't go high in the air in celebration. He's made every Caribbean cricketer proud, take a bow! A massive effort that will inspire the team. This is the kind of performance we expect from this great cricketing nation with a rich legacy. Greaves has been marvelous!
Back of a length and homes in at off, nurdles it out to short cover, cramping so he canno scurry through a run, goes back after taking a few steps, have to get to the milestone with a boundary
Well-judged leave. Shortens his length, curls away a touch from off-stump
Back of a length, quite far from leg-stump, lets it go
Matt: "Have to say, a well judged declaration by NZ. Any fewer and they might have been rolled, any more and they'd have been kicking themselves. Just not good enough to get the ten wickets in the end"
on 197. Over the wicket, back of a length and swerving away outside off, shoudlers arms
back of a length and swings in markedly from outside off, flicked around the corner for a couple. Greaves struggled a bit in that second run, not a direct hit
Shorter and angling into the hip, moves away from the line and keeps the bat up in the air
Shortish, whizzing in at leg-stump, noteicable swing, left alone
Banged in short around the leg, left alone
Shorter and moving in a touch at middle, blocked to the right of the bowler
Over the wicket, landed short and angling into off-stump, shuffles across and whips it leg-side
Landed short and slanted in at off, defended with aplomb towards short cover
fours slips and a gully, slightly short around the line off, inside half of the bat towards mid-on
Back of a length and plugging in the corridor, kept low and took an inside edge that trickles away from the keeper to deep fine
A full-bunger moving away from off, opens the face and drives it to mid-off
Shorter in length, slanting across off, leaves it alone for the keeper to collect
