Tagenarine Chanderpaul, a left-hand batter from Guyana with an unusual technique, is the son of the illustrious Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who amassed more than 10,000 Test runs also with a peculiar batting style. It's likely that his square-on stance, crouch at the crease, and trigger movement across his stumps were all influenced by watching his father bat. While Chanderpaul senior made most of his Test runs in the middle order, however, Tagenarine began his international career as an opener.

In the age of T20 franchise leagues, Tagenarine is a rarity - a red-ball specialist in the West Indies. He made his first-class debut for Guyana at the age of 16 in 2013, and played alongside his father in his fourth match. They played together in 11 first-class games over a span of five years, and it was only in the last of those fixtures that Tagenarine scored his first hundred in the format. There was no fast-track to the West Indies team though.

It was another five years before Tagenarine was picked for the 2022-23 tour of Australia and made his Test debut in Perth, where he made scores of 51 and 45. He converted his maiden Test hundred into a double-ton against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in February 2023, becoming the first West Indies opener other than Kraigg Brathwaite to score a hundred since March 2013, but his form tapered off after that.

With poor returns in Test series in South Africa, at home against India, and on a second tour of Australia in early 2024, Tagenarine lost his place in the side.
