Barbara Daniels was left stranded on 99 when the last ball of Invicta's innings was bowled in the final of the Women's Premier League against Wakefield at Campbell Park in Milton Keynes.
Daniels. who was England's leading batsman in the series against South Africa this summer and departs with the national squad in November for the Women's World Cup in New Zealand, shared an unbroken partnership of 149 with Penny Arnold to post a total of 201 after 50 overs.
The pair came together with the score on 52 for two after Charlotte Edwards was run out going for a second run from a superb throw in from Joanne de Tute at deep mid off.
Edwards batted fluently for her 26, her opening partnership with Liz Whelan adding 39 for the first wicket but it came to an end when Whelan offered a bottom edge to wicketkeeper Linda Burnley off the bowling of Clare Taylor in the 19th over.
Returning to cricket this summer after working as ECB's women's cricket officer for a year, Daniels played every shot in the book to finish one short of a century. She faced 103 balls and dispatched 13 of them to the different boundaries around the ground.
Her half century came in the 40th over of the innings with a drive through mid on for two but the last ten overs saw both Daniels and Arnold pushing ahead with the run rate and getting on top of the bowlers who were severely punished for some inaccurate bowling on a slow uneven pitch.
Wakefield, winners of the Women's northern league were set 202 to beat Invicta, the southern winners to take the title of the ECB's Premier League competition.
