Barbados' women's team won the British American-sponsored Millennium
Windball Cricket Festival in Disney World over the Whitsuntide
weekend. And the star of the show was talented all-rounder Shelley
Quintyne, who was voted the Most Valuable Player.
Quintyne made 74 runs (average 24.6), took seven wickets and was
excellent in the field, as Barbados topped the eight-team women's
championship which was divided into two zones.
Manager Rawle Clarke attributed the team's success to a good all-round
team performance.
'It was not one individual dominating, but we had some exceptional
performances coming from Pamela Lavine and Shelley Quintyne,' Clarke
said.
'We also saw some good performances coming from Grace Chadderton, and
some good innings from Sandra Bailey, so it was an all-round
performance.
'The competition this year to my mind was very competitive,' Clarke
said.
He noted there were two teams from Antigua and one from the Cayman
Islands, while Trinidad and Tobago also made a return after a long
lay-off.
Barbados topped Zone 1 and went on to defeat teams from Trinidad and
Tobago and Antigua in the semifinals and finals, respectively, to earn
a first-prize cheque of US$4 000 and a trophy.
In the final, Barbados scored 78 for three in 15 overs and then
dismissed the Antiguans for 57 with Pamela Clarke taking four wickets
for 11 runs.
Two men's team from Barbados also participated, with the West Coast
Cavaliers reaching the semifinals.
