At Dubai (ICC Academy), January 7-9, 2012. England XI won by three wickets. Toss: England XI.

An assortment of Irishmen, Scots, Afghans, Namibians and one Pakistan-born Emirati embarrassed England's batsmen on the second day. Only Cook, fresh from his honeymoon, prospered; no one else reached 20. The bowling looked stronger: in his first game since tearing a shoulder muscle in September, Broad struck in each of his first three overs, and took seven in all. The Combined XI recovered from 90 for six thanks to Viljoen, last out two short of a maiden hundred, and Rankin, appearing as an Irishman, though about to join the England Lions. After Strauss declared behind and the top order collapsed again, Mohammad Shahzad scored a second fifty, to go with five catches, and Porterfield set a target of 261. Strauss got England going, but they slipped to 199 for six against Mohammad Nabi's off-spin. Pietersen fell to slow left-armer Dockrell, a full substitute for Hamid Hassan, who had taken a nasty fall over the boundary fence. But Davies and Broad steered them towards victory with nearly nine overs left.

Close of play: first day, England XI 16-0 (Strauss 8, Cook 8); second day, ICC Combined Associate and Affiliate XI 90-5 (Mohammad Shahzad 34, Mohammad Nabi 9).
