History

Cricket in the Philippines is synonymous with Nomads Sports Club in Manila where the game has been played since 1914. Since 2003 the Philippines Cricket Association has been an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council.

The cricket season runs from October through until early June each year. There are currently 12 active clubs who particapte in the national league, and a number of other teams whose activities are confined to social cricket and competing in six a side tournaments. Outside of Manila cricket is played in Cebu, Baguio and Angeles City .

International Competition

The Philippines has long been a venue favoured by touring teams and we always welcome clubs wanting to widen their horizons and enjoy the varied attractions the Philippines has to offer.

Every year the Association organises an international Six a Side Tournament. This has very quickly become one of the most popular sixes tournaments in Asia. Further information and entry details can be obtained from the Philippines Cricket Association.

In 2011 the first Philippine national cricket team saw action in the East Asia Pacific Division 2 championship in Samoa. After recording convincing wins over Indonesia, the Cook Islands, Tonga and South Korea the team was defeated in the final by the host nation. A high performance program is in place and it is the Associations aim to see the national team competing in further international events.

Domestic Competition

The Philippine Cricket League (PCL) is the senior men's competition and was established in 2008 and is played in the T20 format.

The PCL is split into 2 divisions with the top 2 clubs in each division contesting their respective finals. In December 2012 the team representing the Nomads Cricket Club were crowned national champions for the third time.

Plans are well advanced for the 2013 PCL which will be see the addition of 2 new teams into the competition. Plan are also in place for the establishment of 50 over league. The Association having identified the need to give our players exposure to the longer form of the game in order that we can in the future start competing effectively for a place in the World Cricket League.

In recognition of the interest in 6 a side cricket, in 2009 the Philippines Cricket Association introduced the Philippine Six a Side Championships. This is now a 16 team competition for local teams held over 3 days at the Nomads Sports Club in Manila.

Development

The primary focus of the Association is the development of a junior program particularly in indigenous schools. This managed by the Associations 2 full time development officers.

In 2012 a new junior schools program involving coaching and competitions was launched in 6 local state l schools in Manila. There are already 3,000 local indigenous children in this program and the Association is aiming to have 10,000 children in this program by 2014.

There are also plans being developed to expand the schools program into regional areas such as Cebu and Mindanao in line with our strategic development plan. This will be achieved in conjunction corporate partners who have social programs in these regions.

The Association is fortunate to have been paired with the Northern Territory Cricket Association under the ICC's state partnership program. With their assistance we will be delivering a series programs in order to train teachers, coaches and officials. Further details of these programs can be obtained from the association.
