The CA XI chose from 12 players, the New Zealanders from 13. Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja pressed their cases for inclusion in the First Test by scoring centuries; Burns eventually retired, but Khawaja was still there at the close, after hitting 20 fours. The New Zealanders batted solidly the following day: Guptill made a duck, but everyone else reached double figures. Only one other batsman was actually dismissed - the other six all retired out. Ashton Agar's hopes of a Test recall were dented by figures of 22-1-111-0.
