Oman Men's Cricket Team History

Cricket was brought to the football-mad Sultanate of Oman in the 1970s by expatriates from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and it received royal patronage from the early days.

Having played on dusty grounds and concrete strips with artificial turf for decades, Oman got its first proper ground - the picturesque Al Amerat Cricket Stadium - in 2012. The venue has two floodlit grounds, and the main ground hosted the opening match of the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Oman Cricket, the governing body, was formed in 1979, and it became an Affiliate member of the ICC in 2000. The team played its first competitive matches during the 2002 Asian Cricket Council Trophy, and since then, it has taken part in many ACC tournaments, finishing as runners-up in the 2004 edition and twice winning the ACC T20 Cup.

In 2014, Oman was upgraded to an Associate member and in the next few years, the senior men's team rose to prominence, not only qualifying for the 2016 T20 World Cup but also securing T20I status after beating Namibia by five wickets in the Qualifier in Malahide. Their first T20I win came in their second match, against Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi in November 2015.

In their first game at the 2016 T20 World Cup, Oman pulled off a . Three years later, they achieved ODI status for the first time after beating Namibia in the World Cricket League Division Two. Their first ODI win against a Full Member nation came in 2023, also against Ireland in the World Cup Qualifier.
