First One-day International

At Auckland, February 14. New Zealand won by 77 runs. Having themselves just returned from their Australian tour, New Zealand"s batsmen were not quite re-acclimatised to home conditions and batted indifferently on a slow pitch. They were indebted to an innings of 99 not out by Edgar, who played through the innings to earn the Man of the Match award. Edwards, who had missed the Australian tour, gave him valuable support, and Hadlee made 22 in quick time. The Indian bowling was not particularly distinguished and their batting even less so. With India 10 for two, the writing was already on the wall and at 41 for five, in the eighteenth over, they were doomed, although Kapil Dev saved face with a rapid 50.
