ENGLAND v NEW ZEALAND

At The Oval, June 9. England won by 106 runs, a convincing victory over a New Zealand side who had beaten them five times during the winter. Once Lamb and Gatting, coming together at 117 for three, had made 115 in sixteen overs, there was no doubt that England would score enough runs. Lamb's 102 was made off only 103 balls and the last 25 overs produced 203 runs. New Zealand's disappointing bowling was followed by a poor start to their innings of 62 for four, and although Crowe made 97 before being last out, they had lost sight of victory long before.

Man of the Match: A. J. Lamb.
