†WEST INDIES v AUSTRALIA 1983-84

At Port-of-Spain, March 14. Australia won by four wickets. An unsatisfactory match, watched by a crowd of almost 30,000, began half an hour late, because of a damp pitch caused by sweating under the covers, and was reduced to 37 overs an innings. After gaining a winning position, Australia nearly panicked themselves into defeat and only scrambled to victory on an overthrown boundary with two balls remaining. Australia put West Indies in, and on a lively pitch Lawson soon disposed of Haynes and Richardson with two superb deliveries; but faulty catching gave Greenidge and Richards chances as they added 110. Lloyd hit Lawson's last three balls of the innings to the boundary, but West Indies could not be satisfied with their total. A fine 67 in 92 balls by Wessels was the basis of Australia's excellent start against wayward bowling from Daniel and Marshall, but there followed three run-outs to set up the tense finale.

Man of the Match: K. C. Wessels.
