First One-day International

Four outstanding individual performances enabled Australia to open their campaign with convincing a victory at the floodlit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Accustomed to making the adjustments required to compete successfully under lights, they controlled the match from the time Wessels and Hughes added 128 for the second wicket. Wessels, returning after knee surgery, played splendidly for his first century in 30 limited-overs internationals, while Hughes was in characteristically flamboyant mood. Rackemann (four for 41 in ten overs) and Phillips (three catches and one stumping) provided admirable support.

Man of the Match: K. C. Wessels.
