At Brisbane, January 11. India won by five wickets. The ball swung for a time in the morning, but afterwards conditions were ideal for batting. New Zealand, again sent in, started boldly, Crowe (76 from 83 balls) and Edgar (75 from 118 balls) adding 130 in 26 overs. India, whose requirement was larger than their highest score ever achieved batting second, were given a flying start by Gavaskar with 27 (one 6, four 4s) from seventeen balls. Srikkanth hit seven 4s in his 50, Amarnath had a 6 and eight 4s in his 61 before being fourth out at 162, and finally Kapil Dev and Shastri, with an unbroken, 87-run stand, won the match with two overs to spare.
