A loose second spell by Foster, during which Waugh picked up two successive balls for six into the Tavern, tilted a close game irrevocably in favour of Australia. Played to a capacity crowd and in glorious weather, like its predecessors, the final match of the series featured Gooch's and Marsh's seventh hundreds in, respectively, their 70th and 71st internationals; and the longest and easily most stylish streak on an English cricket ground, by a shapely young lady from the Essex-Suffolk borders. It started from the Mound Stand and finished by the Warner Stand and included an exultant cartwheel. Australia also showed their class, winning well despite an opening stand of 123 in 127 minutes between Gooch (162 balls, eleven fours) and Gower (100 balls) and an eleven-ball 25 not out by Botham. Alderman, none the less, emerged with three for 36. Following careful platform-building, Border supplied Australia's crucial thrust, scoring his 53 off 46 balls, while Marsh (162 balls, one six, seven fours) played anchor-man.
