Rutherford misjudged his home city's weather when he chose to bat, believing it would not rain. After New Zealand had reached a useful 32 for one in 9.2 overs, a long interruption meant the match was reduced to 30 overs. Under pressure to score quick runs, numerous batsmen then committed suicide; the innings staggered to 122 for nine without anyone passing 20. Though the seamers gave their side some chance by breaking through early - Pakistan were 35 for four - they could not remove Saeed Anwar, who was far and away the best batsman on the day. Rashid Latif joined in with three sixes near the end.
