INDIA v SOUTH AFRICA

At Hamilton February 18. South Africa won by 14 runs. Toss: South Africa.

Though the margin was small, South Africa held the advantage throughout on an unusually bare, brown, slow pitch. Cullinan and Kirsten took South Africa to 167 for one before Kumble began a spell of four for 18 in five overs. Tight bowling meant that the South Africans did not capitalise, but neither did India when they replied. Jadeja took 91 deliveries over 29 and India slid far behind the needed rate; Srinath's 37 from 25 balls came too late. South Africa were boosted by superior fielding: Callaghan ran from long-on to take Sidhu left-handed as the ball fell behind him and De Villiers ran out Prabhakar with a superb sliding stop and throw at fine leg.

Man of the Match: G. Kirsten.
