First Test match

South Africa v Australia 1921-22

Played at DURBAN, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, November 5, 7, 8, 9. Drawn. In the first of the Test matches the South Africans escaped defeat, but though they played well they were rather outclassed. At the close they had only three wickets to fall, and were 207 runs behind. It had been arranged to draw stumps on the last day at five o'clock, and it was the general opinion that Collins threw away his chance of victory by not declaring earlier. In scoring so heavily the Australians owed a good deal to dropped catches, but Macartney's second innings was superb. He scored his 117 in less than two hours, and gave only one chance that went fairly to hand.
