It was in saving the second Test match that the South Africans gave their best display during the tour. The Australians stayed in the whole of the first day. Collins, in first and out ninth, was seen at his very best, batting for four hours and a half without making a mistake of any kind. Gregory hit hard, but gave three chances. Towards the close of the second day the South Africans followed on against a balance of 207 runs, and at the drawing of stumps their score stood at 39 for one wicket, Frank being not out 13. The stern part of the game came on the following day. Frank kept up his wicket all the afternoon, and received such help from Taylor and Nourse that at the close of play the score with only three men out had reached 311. Altogether Frank was batting for over eight hours and a half. Taylor was able to declare before the tea interval on the fourth day, and when the Australians had scored seven runs an appeal against the light caused a memorable match to be given up.
