Second Test Match

South Africa v England

After following-on for the second successive Test, South Africa managed to save the game fairly comfortably helped by a magnificent century by the Rhodesian Bland and the loss of two hours on the final day because of rain and bad light.

Both teams were unchanged and Smith had the good fortune to win the toss. After Boycott went cheaply, Barber and Dexter mastered the bowling. They added 136 for the second wicket and Barber's highest Test score included fifteen 4's.

Dexter, who began slowly, showed his best form. None of the bowlers could halt his powerful strokes and during his five and a half hours at the crease he hit twenty-seven 4's. Barrington batted almost as long for his second successive Test hundred.

South Africa again found difficulty against Allen and Titmus and despite Goddard and then Pithey, who stayed four and a half hours, they followed-on 214 behind.

They began the last day needing 68 to avoid an innings defeat with six wickets remaining. Bland used his feet to kill the menace of Allen and Titmus and received valuable help from R.G. Pollock and Varnals.

When rain ended the match, South Africa were over 100 ahead. Bland batted just over four hours and hit two 6's and sixteen 4's.
