First Test Match

PAKISTAN v NEW ZEALAND 1955-56

At Karachi, October 13, 14, 15, 17. Pakistan won by an innings and one run. New Zealand completely failed to subdue the Pakistan spin bowlers on a true matting pitch, and the match ended early on the final day. After making a slow but safe against the faster bowlers on the opening day, the New Zealanders were troubled as soon as Kardar and Zulfiqar Ahmed entered the attack. Pakistan fared little better at the start of their first innings, losing four men for 74. Then they recovered well through determined stands of 66 between Kardar and Imtiaz Ahmed, and 78 by Shuja-ud-Din and Wazir Mohammad. When New Zealand batted again 125 runs behind, Shuja-ud-Din showed his all-round ability. With left-arm slows, he dismissed Sutcliffe, Poore and McGregor while the score stood at 27, disasters from which New Zealand did not recover. The later batsmen fell ready victims to more good off-break bowling by Zulfiqar Ahmed.
