Australia v India 1999-2000

At Melbourne, January 12 (day/night). Australia won by 28 runs. Toss: Australia.

Spectators in the lower Southern Stand, angered when Ganguly was run out in the 40th over, held up play for 17 minutes by hurling plastic bottles on to the outfield. Ganguly had scored his tenth one-day hundred, off 127 balls, and added 109 with Dravid, when he failed to ground his bat as Symonds's throw from cover broke the wicket. Those watching replays mistakenly believed Ganguly was safely in. Not that India looked like preventing the first win in Australia's record run of 14 one-day internationals without defeat. They were always off the pace after a slow start, not helped by two other run-outs. Australia had lost their openers inside four overs but then their batting caught fire, sparked by Ponting's sixth one-day century. His 115 off 121 balls iced the cake after his appointment as vice-captain in place of Warne, who tore a side muscle at Brisbane. The inclusion of Shane Lee for Warne provided the first instance of two sets of brothers playing for Australia.

Man of the Match: R. T. Ponting. Attendance: 73,219.
