Standard Bank International Series 1999-2000

South Africa v England 1999-2000

Toss: South Africa. International debuts: V. S. Solanki, G. P. Swann.

The highest opening partnership against South Africa in one-day internationals gained England a comprehensive victory with more than ten overs remaining. After choosing to bat, South Africa were soon in trouble against the new ball, plummeting to 23 for four by the seventh over as Gough put a disappointing Test series behind him. Kallis played a watchful innings, adding 69 in 17 overs with Strydom, but accurate, economical bowling from Caddick and Ealham, along with excellent fielding, restricted South Africa to a modest total on a reasonable pitch. Hussain and Knight had reached 165, just 20 short of the target, when Hussain was caught at cover. It was only the fourth time in 302 limited-overs games that England had won by nine wickets.

Man of the Match: D. Gough. Attendance: 11,912.
