First one-day international

Sri Lanka v Bangladesh

At Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, August 4. Sri Lanka won by five wickets. Toss: Bangladesh. International debut: K. H. R. K. Fernando.

All the players rested for the Second Test returned to Sri Lanka's line-up, including Aravinda de Silva, whose last one-day international had been in New Zealand 18 months earlier. He was out for one, to a questionable catch behind the wicket, but it was a minor setback for his side. Jayasuriya rushed to 40 by their eighth over, and Atapattu, who had been opening with him since Romesh Kaluwitharana was axed in England, guided them home with a measured 83. Earlier, Bangladesh reached 226, their highest one-day total against Sri Lanka, thanks largely to a stand of 90 between 18-year-old Tushar Imran and the captain, Khaled Masud.

Man of the Match: M. S. Atapattu.
