First one-day international

Pakistan v Bangladesh

At Chittagong, January 22. Pakistan won by 49 runs. Toss: Pakistan. International debut: Tareq Aziz.

With Pakistan deep in trouble at 88 for five after 27 overs - Waqar Younis had opted to bat on a lively pitch in misty conditions - the capacity crowd of 24,000 dared to hope for a repeat of Northampton 1999, Bangladesh's only victory over Test-playing opposition. But the experienced pair of Rashid Latif and Abdul Razzaq put on an invaluable 80, and Latif's personal-best 79 steered Pakistan past 200. Tareq Aziz, an 18-year-old seamer making his international debut on his home ground, was the pick of the bowlers. Bangladesh still had a chance, but it was gone by the 16th over, when Shoaib reduced them to 32 for four. Khaled Masud saved face with a patient fifty.

Man of the Match: Rashid Latif.
