Pool A - 2003 World Cup

Holland v India

At Paarl, February 12, 2003. India won by 68 runs. Toss: India. One-day international debut: J. Smits.

India won all right but their batting line-up, the most lustrous in the tournament, was skittled for 204 by a team who train by skating on frozen ponds. And it was a very good day for Tim de Leede (formerly of various county Second XIs), who snared Tendulkar as his first World Cup wicket and celebrated by taking three more. During his innings of 52, Tendulkar overtook Javed Miandad as the highest run-scorer in World Cups, but Dutch captain Lefebvre was able to be humorously patronising: "Tendulkar looked very tame to me," he said. Yuvraj Singh and Mongia prevented a disastrously low total and early wickets prevented an embarrassing result, but it was not until the penultimate over on a day of extreme heat that India bowled Holland out. Daan van Bunge, a student from The Hague, scored 62. India reflected on their performance, looked at their next fixture, and gulped.

Man of the Match: T. B. M. de Leede. Attendance: 3,674.
