Third One-Day International

Bangladesh v South Africa

At Dhaka, April 14, 2003 (day/night). South Africa won by 83 runs. South Africa 6 pts. Toss: South Africa.

After four years of defeats and eight months without making 200, Bangladesh marked the first day in the Bengali calendar with a welcome glimmer of New Year's resolution. On a docile pitch, they managed 211, with Mohammad Ashraful lasting nearly 30 overs for 52 and giving another glimpse of the gumption that made him Test cricket's youngest century-maker. However, South Africa had already reached a total some way beyond Bangladesh's modest firepower. Their top three all got themselves in but got themselves out with big scores beckoning: Smith pretended to beat his head against his bat as he trudged off. From 189 for three in the 32nd over, South Africa were disappointed with 294, but it was plenty.

Man of the Match: Mohammad Ashraful.
