Bennett King's first outing as West Indies coach was to his native Australia, for the one-day triangular VB Series also involving Pakistan. In the run-up to the tour, it was unclear who would be travelling with him; the West Indian board had to delay announcing the party as they struggled to resolve a dispute with the players over sponsorship contracts. Caribbean governments eventually secured a temporary settlement, and King was able to take his first-choice squad. But they won only two of their nine fixtures on the trip: one warm-up game against Australia A, and one international against Pakistan. Both victories relied on stunning centuries by captain Brian Lara.
