Match 4, Australia v West Indies

DLF Cup in Malaysia, 2006-07 (A/ I/ WI)

Daniel Brettig

At Kuala Lumpur, September 18, 2006 (day/night). West Indies won by three wickets. West Indies 4 pts. Toss: Australia.

An Australian sixth-wicket record was outshone by an even more destructive partnership from Lara and Gayle as West Indies recorded their first live victory - before a series had been decided - over Australia since 1999. On a pitch being used for the third time, and showing signs of fatigue, Bradshaw and Taylor had the Australians well in check at 104 for five. However, Hussey's remarkable form continued with a perfectly paced 109 from 90 balls - his first century in oneday internationals, in his first match as captain - while Haddin provided muscle reminiscent of Rod Marsh, crashing four sixes in his own highest score. West Indies responded, after a dubious caught-behind decision against Chanderpaul, by savaging Clark, a star in South Africa not long before. His figures were Australia's second-worst after Mick Lewis's none for 113 at Johannesburg six months earlier. Still, the departure of Gayle and Lara to horizontal-bat swipes almost proved costly, until Bravo restored order and ensured his side reached the final.

Man of the Match: M. E. K. Hussey.
