For ten overs, with Gayle in destroyer mode and Chanderpaul also stroking the ball sweetly, West Indies harboured visions of retaining their trophy with a famous upset. But then Bracken sneaked a cutter through Gayle's defence to trigger a terminal slide from 80 for two: the last eight wickets disappeared for just 58. McGrath, clouted for two sixes by Gayle, came back strongly to dismiss Lara and Morton - the batting heroes of West Indies' win in the group game - and the muscular Watson helped mop up the tail, as only three batsmen reached double figures. Gilchrist and Ponting soon fell, but Australia had already knocked off 45 by the time dinner was taken. An unseasonal shower then delayed proceedings for a couple of hours, but there were few more alarms once the players re-emerged with the target trimmed to 116 from 35 overs. Martyn continued to mine his rich seam of form, but it was Watson who clinched the match award with another powerful innings. Victory came with 41 balls to spare, and Australia celebrated the collection of the only major trophy to elude them in recent times, before heading home to finish off the preparations for the Ashes campaign.
