Fifth One-Day International

India v Pakistan 2007-08

Anand Vasu

At Jaipur, November 18, 2007 (day/night). Pakistan won by 31 runs. Toss: India. One-day international debuts: P. Kumar; Sarfraz Ahmed.

Shoaib Malik had been under fire throughout the series for his captaincy, his batting, and a reluctance to bowl - but he silenced the critics with a typically cool performance with the bat, making 89 at better than a run a ball. With Mohammad Yousuf continuing his consistent form - he and Malik put on 168, a national fourth-wicket record against India - Pakistan piled up 306. Then came another plus for the tourists: Sohail Tanvir, slanting in his left-arm medium-pacers from an unusual angle and off the wrong foot, picked up four wickets and bowled himself into the Test team. Tanvir winkled out three of the top four, then added the important last wicket of Pathan to reduce India's margin of victory in the series to 3-2.

Man of the Match: Shoaib Malik. Man of the Series: Yuvraj Singh.
