India v England in India, 2011-12

Stephen Brenkley

At Mohali, October 20, 2011 (day/night). India won by five wickets. Toss: England

If England at last managed to provide a proper contest, their fractious attitude towards their opponents and each other was the enduring memory of a game that clinched the series for India. It was pointedly condemned in the aftermath by Dhoni, who once more played a key role in seeing India home when it looked as though they might struggle. Asked about the manner in which England had conducted themselves, Dhoni said it was vital for teams to stick together. "It's very important to be nice to your team-mates," he said. England's discordant behaviour followed their most complete batting performance of the tour. Trott's unbeaten 98 from 116 balls applied the cement to their innings, but yet again provoked debate about his role because of his inability to move through the gears: he hit only one of his eight fours in the last ten overs of England's innings. Pietersen was briefly in his pomp, and Patel played easily his most confident international innings, an unbeaten 70 from 43 balls. India looked once more to be cantering to victory as Rahane and Gambhir took a grip in the middle overs during a stand of 111, only for Finn and Bresnan to instil some doubt. But when Dhoni assumed control, England's fielding grew as unruly as their tempers, with Kieswetter - who trod on the stumps while trying to run out Jadeja - especially culpable.
