New Zealand v England, 2012-13

David Clough

At Hamilton, February 17, 2013 (day/night). New Zealand won by three wickets. Toss: New Zealand.
A seesaw match culminated in a dramatic - but pyrrhic - victory for New Zealand as Brendon McCullum and a limping Guptill took them over the line. The sting in the tail was that both Guptill, who returned to see them home, having retiring hurt after the sixth over with a hamstring strain, and left-arm seamer McClenaghan - unable to finish his final over because of a side injury - would play no further part in the series. England ought to have made more after reaching 190 for three with ten overs to go, but the onslaught never materialised. In New Zealand's chase, Williamson provided the substance, before McCullum took toll of the previously miserly Anderson, whose ninth over began 644 and proved almost as expensive as his first eight combined. But it was to be Guptill's finale, as - with no runner allowed - he re-emerged in the 46th over, with 41 still needed, and hit 24 from ten balls. For Anderson, there was the consolation of a 529th international victim, which took him past Ian Botham as England's most prolific wicket-taker in all formats.
