Wisden

1905

Archie MacLaren provided a lengthy essay on English wickets, reflecting the concern that their preparation should not be over-elaborate. There was further debate about the length of Test matches, with a compromise reached for the forthcoming Ashes series, in which four of the five would be three-day affairs, and the fifth played to a finish (should the rubber so require it). Northamptonshire was welcomed onto the list of first-class counties, but nearly 100 years before a two-division system was adopted, Wisden spoke out against the concept of promotion and relegation in the County Championship. "The idea of [relegating] a county with the traditions of Surrey or Notts ... as the result of one bad season could not be entertained for a moment." Bernard Bosanquet described MCC's tour of Australia as "successful in every way - except financially".
