Bangladesh have not risked an injured Tamim Iqbal in the Asia Cup with the aim of having him fit for the World Twenty20 in March. Tamim had suffered a neck strain after the second Test against Sri Lanka and had missed the three-match ODI series, which ended on Saturday.

The selectors also recalled Ziaur Rahman and Imrul Kayes to the ODI squad while allrounder Mahmudullah was left out following poor form in recent matches.

Ziaur, whose last ODI was against New Zealand in November, had recently struck 167 in a first-class game and is expected to fill the No. 7 slot in the order, strengthening the batting depth of the side.

Imrul was recently recalled to the Test side after more than two years and had struck a century on his comeback. The batsman last played an ODI for Bangladesh in December 2011 but has been performing well in domestic cricket recently.

Ziaur's selection ahead of the in-form allrounder Farhaz Reza was a surprise, but chief selector Faruque Ahmed said it was necessary to recall Ziaur, for his recent domestic form and the added option of his medium-pace bowling.

"The No 7 position is proving very important and therefore Ziaur Rahman gets in," Faruque said. "He is in form and has been performing consistently at domestic level. We will not be getting Tamim Iqbal in the Asia Cup. He has not recovered from an injury and it may take another week or so for him to return. Under the circumstances our priority is to have him fully fit for the ICC World Twenty20 and he will continue his rehabilitation.

Arafat Sunny will continue as cover for Shakib Al Hasan, who was handed a three-match ban by the BCB for an inappropriate gesture during the second ODI. Shakib will be available for selection after Bangladesh's first two games in the tournament.

Faruque also stressed that the squad, which was announced hours after Bangladesh went down 3-0 in the ODIs to Sri Lanka, was capable of bouncing back in the Asia Cup.

"There are two left-arm spinners in the squad other than Shakib Al Hasan," Faruque said. "This was necessary as we will not have Shakib's services in the first two games. I believe we are not playing that badly. We just need to get a couple of results and I am confident the boys will be able to comeback from the disappointment of the series against Sri Lanka."

Bangladesh squad for Asia Cup: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Anamul Haque, Imrul Kayes, Shamsur Rahman, Naeem Islam, Mominul Haque, Nasir Hossain, Arafat Sunny, Ziaur Rahman, Abdur Razzak, Sohag Gazi, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Rubel Hossain, Al-Amin Hossain, Shakib Al Hasan

Shafiul Islam is a very poor ODI bowler. Look at his economy rate. I think Bangladesh need new captain and coaches more than anything else.

Mushfiqur comments are shocking and disappointing, BCB must look for another captain.

First he criticised Al Amin, then spoke of loosing to Afghanistan and now against Faruqe Ahmed and BCB.

Firs concentrate on your own performance.

@ahmedfaysal trash by who? Are you referring to BD. Do you still think BD can trash SL? (remember 3-0 in ODI and 2-0 in T20 and 1-0 in test) Thats what I call a banglawash. Anyway if you think BD can trash SL and if it makes you happy think like that.

I pray for BD team. they will win various match in Asia Cup. Good luck Bangladesh.

BD fans need to realize tigers r not gonna play against WI, NZ or other non-Asian weak teams. Condition of pitches & weather Dhaka & Narrayanganj cities r very similar to other south-Asian countries. Last time BD were 2 runs away 4m Asia Cup title due to in-form BD XI. But this time they'll totally miss the service of their best top order batsman Tamim, miss their best cricketer Shakib for 2 crucial matches & most other cricketers r out of form including Mashrafi, Nasir & Gazi. Their best bowler Razzak will just return 4m an injury. It won't b surprising if Afg do any upset against this weakened BD XI.

Hello Srilankan fans Congratulating your team, captain, coach for a great performance and win the series against a team whose recent past home records were great . I think kushal perera will be the next big thing from Srilanka, as per talent he is in the level of Sanath, Sanga, Mahela or Dilshan. You have a great consistent records in world cup tournaments. Last 10 years you are the most successful cricket nation in world cup stage.

Comparatively BD played well in the past Srilanka series. Their performance was going up from 2nd Test draw. both T20 was closely contested and everyone enjoyed those matches. in One day series first match was a good one. BD was near to win that match. I still think about Gazi and Mahmudullah's catch miss while SRL 68/8 was the turning point in that series. If they can took those catches BD would have won that match, gain confidence and even won the series. Nevertheless it is just part of game and a very rare learning opportunity because BD was never in those situations in recent past series. It is all about concentration. Little lapse of concentration can damage your hard work.

With this squad Bangladesh's chance of beating Afghanistan has come down to zero. @Harmony-111.Wait and watch Bangladesh will be beaten handsomely by afghanistan.
