November 2007
At the age of 18, Hughes makes his first-class debut for New South Wales in a Pura Cup match against Tasmania at the SCG. Opening the batting, he scores 51 against Tasmania.
February 2008
Scores 116 in the Pura Cup final win over Victoria at the SCG. It is his maiden first-class century and at the age of 19 makes him the youngest player to score a hundred in a Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup final.
February 2009
Having just been named Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year, Hughes is called up to replace the retired Matthew Hayden and makes his Test debut against South Africa in Johannesburg. Scores a duck and 75 at the Wanderers, and surprises the South Africa fast bowlers with his approach to short-pitched bowling, often using the pace to cut them over the cordon.
March 2009
In his second Test in Durban, Hughes becomes the youngest man to score a century in each innings of a Test when at the age of 20 he registers 115 and 160 against South Africa. "It's very exciting," Hughes said. "I didn't actually know about that record until I walked into the sheds and a couple of guys mentioned it but it was one very special moment."
July 2009
Is dropped from the Test team for the first time, after struggling against short-pitched bowling in the first two Ashes Tests in England. Shane Watson takes his place as Simon Katich's opening partner.
March 2010
Having played a one-off Test against Pakistan in January as a replacement for the injured Katich, Hughes is again called up as an injury replacement, this time for Watson in Wellington. Hughes entertains the crowd by scoring an unbeaten 86 from 75 balls in Australia's small fourth-innings chase of 106.
December 2010
Hughes wins another call-up when Katich is ruled out of the remainder of the home Ashes series after suffering an Achilles tear in the second Test. Hughes plays the final three Tests of the series, with little impact.
March 2011
Another Sheffield Shield final, another hundred. But this time Hughes' 138 and 93 were not enough for New South Wales, who lost the decider to Tasmania at Bellerive Oval.
August-September 2011
Retains his place in the Test side, somewhat controversially after Katich lost his Cricket Australia contract mid-year, for the tour of Sri Lanka. In the third Test in Colombo, Hughes scores 126, his third Test century.
December 2011
Struggles with the ball angled across him in the home series against New Zealand and is out caught in the cordon by Martin Guptill off the bowling of Chris Martin in all four innings in the series. Hughes is subsequently dropped a second time, for the series against India that follows.
December 2012
Recalled once more to the Test side for the home series against Sri Lanka and makes two scores in the 80s.
January 2013
Finally receives a long-overdue one-day international call-up and becomes the first Australian to score a century on ODI debut when he makes 112 in a big win over Sri Lanka at the MCG. Follows up with another hundred in the same series, 138 not out in another victory over Sri Lanka in Hobart.
February 2013
Is named Australia's Domestic Cricketer of the Year at the Allan Border Medal night in Melbourne, after a 12-month period in which he scored 1108 runs across all formats at the average of 55.40.
February-March 2013
Struggles in the turning conditions in India during Australia's four-Test series there, but fights out an innings of 69 in Mohali.
July-August 2013
Batting at No.6, Hughes plays a mature innings of 81 not out in the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, an innings that is overshadowed by the 98 scored at the other end by debutant Ashton Agar. But despite what seems a coming-of-age effort from Hughes, he is dropped from the Test team for a third time after scoring 1 in each innings of the next Test at Lord's.
July 2014
Another first for Hughes: he becomes the first Australian batsman to score a double-century in a List A one-day match when he blasts an unbeaten 202 for Australia A against South Africa A in Darwin. A six off the last ball of the innings gets him past the 200 milestone.
August 2014
Makes the highest first-class score of his career, with an unbeaten 243 for Australia A against South Africa A in Townsville.
October 2014
Scores 65 in Australia's tour match against Pakistan A in Sharjah, but is unable to win selection in the two Tests that follow against Pakistan in the UAE.
November 25, 2014
Is struck in the head by a bouncer during South Australia's Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales at the SCG and is rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
